Meanings shift and change with my work, but...

This intense and intricate mixed-media piece visualizes the fragmentation of identity and perception within a shifting, unstable reality. The central figure, its face layered with chaotic textures, piercing eyes, and jagged expressions, appears caught in a struggle—an attempt to grasp something intangible yet fundamental. Surrounding the figure, swirling glyphs and symbols contribute to the sense of dislocation, as if reality itself is slipping through its grasp.

The title, Out of Place and Time (Grasping at Decoherence in the Hilbert Space), references deep concepts in quantum mechanics and existential uncertainty. Out of Place and Time suggests a being untethered from conventional reality, floating between states, neither fully here nor there. Decoherence in the Hilbert Space refers to the quantum phenomenon where superpositions collapse into a single outcome through interaction with an environment—essentially, the process by which the quantum realm gives way to classical reality. The act of "grasping at decoherence" evokes an attempt to hold onto stability, to define oneself amidst the collapsing waves of infinite possibility.

The layered eyes within the composition, some watchful, others fragmented, reinforce this tension between multiple realities coexisting at once. The jagged teeth and reaching appendages suggest a desperate, almost primal attempt to seize control over something inherently uncertain. The surrounding symbols and undulating forms mimic the incomprehensible mathematics of Hilbert space, where infinite dimensions coexist—mirroring the existential challenge of defining oneself in a reality that is constantly shifting beneath our perception.

This piece presents a visual paradox: a figure trying to anchor itself within a reality that is by nature ungraspable. It challenges the viewer to consider the fragile nature of identity, time, and perception, questioning whether what we call "reality" is merely the outcome of probabilities collapsing around us. If decoherence is inevitable, how much of what we believe to be solid and true is simply a fleeting construct within a much larger, unknowable framework?
