Meanings shift and change with my work, but...

This visually arresting mixed-media work pulsates with a chaotic energy that blends cosmic grandeur with unsettling emotional complexity. The jagged, interwoven figures—fractured yet cohesive—appear locked in a surreal moment of observation, reaction, and transformation. The piece is teeming with sharp-toothed expressions, swirling patterns, and hypnotic eyes that seem to capture an act of witnessing—perhaps one of amusement, perhaps one of dread.

The title, Essence of Schadenfreude (How We Laughed As He Passed Over the Event Horizon), immediately sets a tone of dark humor intertwined with cosmic inevitability. Schadenfreude, the pleasure derived from another’s misfortune, is juxtaposed here with the event horizon, the ultimate threshold of no return in black hole physics. This combination suggests a profound metaphor: witnessing the irreversible fall of another, with a sense of amusement or detachment, even as they descend into the unknown.

The painting reflects this tension visually—chaotic forms swirl and stretch, evoking gravitational distortion, as if the figures themselves are being pulled toward oblivion. The vibrant yet ominous interplay of textures, symbols, and glyph-like text reinforces a sense of fate unfolding, observed from a distance by those unaffected. The omnipresent eyes scattered throughout the composition suggest an audience—an inescapable awareness of the event, whether it be cosmic or personal.

At a deeper level, the work raises existential and ethical questions. In the grand theater of the universe, do we bear responsibility for what we witness? Do we laugh at destruction out of powerlessness, or is there an inherent cruelty in detachment? The painting does not provide clear answers but rather invites reflection on how we react to the suffering of others—whether we empathize, mock, or simply watch as they are consumed by forces beyond their control.

Ultimately, this piece is a meditation on the absurdity of existence, where humor and horror coexist. It forces the viewer to confront the duality of observation—are we the ones watching from a safe distance, or are we the ones unknowingly being drawn toward our own event horizon?
