Meanings shift and change with my work, but...
This visually dynamic and conceptually rich mixed-media piece embodies a moment of confrontation at the threshold of understanding. The jagged, interwoven figures, marked by shifting eyes, expressive mouths, and cosmic patterns, seem to occupy a space between realities—a liminal state where the known begins to unravel into the unknown. The background, teeming with symbols and swirling inscriptions, reinforces a sense of encoded meaning just beyond reach, as if reality itself is layered with hidden structures waiting to be deciphered.
The title, Barking at the Liminal Rift (Unraveling the Cosmic Familiar), is loaded with dualities—both playfulness and existential weight. “Barking” evokes a primal reaction, an instinctive response to something unknown or unsettling, much like a dog reacting to an unseen force. This suggests an interaction with the liminal not through intellectualization, but through raw, intuitive expression. The “Liminal Rift” represents a space between worlds, between certainty and chaos, where boundaries dissolve. It hints at thresholds of perception, quantum states, or the fragile separation between conscious reality and deeper cosmic truths.
The phrase “Unraveling the Cosmic Familiar” suggests that what we take for granted—the laws of physics, the constructs of identity, the comfort of what we recognize—may not be as stable as they appear. The visual elements reinforce this notion: the fragmented, shape-shifting figures seem to be in the process of dissolving or reforming, their bodies stitched together from layers of symbols, textures, and colors that hint at multiple perspectives existing simultaneously.
A particularly intriguing aspect of the painting is the balance between the organic and the geometric. The swirling blue void-like forms seem to both obscure and reveal the underlying figures, mirroring how new understanding often disrupts old frameworks before new clarity emerges. The central figure, with its jagged, almost mythical expression, seems both wary and enraptured—an entity standing at the edge of comprehension.
This piece challenges the viewer to consider the nature of perception itself. Are we constantly barking at the edges of a greater reality, sensing something vast and incomprehensible just beyond the veil? And if the familiar is unraveling, does that mean we are losing our grip on reality, or are we finally seeing it as it truly is? Barking at the Liminal Rift does not seek to answer these questions but immerses the viewer in the experience of standing at the edge of the unknown, both resisting and surrendering to the cosmic mystery.
